Dan Burton himself could not have envisaged the splendour of the unexplored
locations his career would take him to: the challenging situations it
would present him with, and the unique individuals it would introduce
him to.
Like so many of us Dan was drawn to the magic of the ocean as a child
by Jactus Cousteau. At the age of 18 he finally had the opportunity to
learn to dive. Inspired by an enthusiastic diving instructor it was not
long before Dan had a camera with him on every dive, and the seeds of
his exciting career had been sown.
Having travelled extensively, Dan returned to Britain to Enrol as a student
of photography where both his enthusiasm and natural talent flourished.
During his years as a student, Dan gained a number of awards in recognition
of his outstanding talent including gold and silver at the AMI Audio Awards
presented in New Orleans. It was no surprise when Dan gained distinction
in his higher diploma; closely followed by a second distinction for his
BIPP (British Institute of Professional Photography) Post graduate course.
Immediately upon completing college, Dans' career was launched when he
was invited to join a number of deep water diving projects using mixed
gases. These included the recovery of silver from the El Cazador wreck
which lies in 300ft (90m) of water in the bay of Mexico, and the first
NOAA ( National Oceanic Atmosphere Administration) trimix dive expedition
to explore the USS Monitor in Cape Hatteras. In 1997 he was to have the
unique experience of photographing the once majestic HMHS Britannic, which
is his deepest assignment yet at 380ft (120m) of water. She's bigger than
her sister ship the TITANIC!
Dan's interest in photographing people
has brought him into contact with individual from all walks of life. He
spent time documenting NASA's underwater neutral buoyancy facility in
Huntsville. AL. USA.
More recently he has become involved in both photographing freedivers
and got involved in freediving photography.
For the past eight years Dan’s life has been full of foreign adventures,
which have been published in books and magazines all over the world.
His photography has appeared in prestigious publications such as National
Geographic, Scientific America, WIRED, BBC Wildlife, Arena, Titanic Society,
Tauchen, AQUA, Microsoft Magazine and more. His filming has been used
by The National Geographic Channel, BBC,and the History & Learning
Channel. His recent assignments incude covering the Camel
Trophy 2000 and Discovery.com
shark week website.
For the last 4 year he has started to supply his stock photography to
the BBC Natural
History Unit Picture Library, WILDLIFE, Pictor
International. & Interspace Vision.
